Highlights of an Arapahoe County department:  OPEN SPACE

In 2003, the citizens of Arapahoe County generously voted to create a County Open Space Program.  This program is part of the Arapahoe County Government Public Works and Development Department.  It is designed to provide recreation opportunities while preserving the natural beauty of our county.  Partnering with local communities and park and recreation districts, the Open Space Program:
  •     protects 11 parks, trails, and open spaces in unincorporated Arapahoe County,
  •     improves wildlife habitat,
  •     develops and completes trails and their connectivity, and
  •     preserves heritage spaces
The  Open Space Program plans are developed by  the Open Space and Trails Advisory Board. This  seven-member advisory board which is chosen by the Board of County Commissioners is responsible for reviewing proposed projects, making  recommendations regarding the distribution of revenue collected from the sales tax and to the municipalities in the County, as well as performing other duties as permitted under the resolution approved by voters.
