Arapahoe County completes general election

Board of Canvassers finalizes 2010 General Election results Friday

LITTLETON, CO --- The Arapahoe County Clerk and Recorder’s Office has completed the 2010 General Election with the results certified by the County Board of Canvassers Friday, Nov. 19.
"Arapahoe County had a very successful election, but we could not have done it without the help of our citizens, the tireless work of our 1,500 election workers and the dedicated County employees who worked together to make it happen," said Clerk and Recorder Nancy A. Doty. "We appreciate our team of dedicated citizens and employees who committed their time, energy and community spirit to ensure a fair and accurate general election."
The County Board of Canvassers, which consists of Doty as the designated elected official, Arapahoe County Republican Party Representative Arvin Michel and Arapahoe County Democratic Chair Mike Hamrick, unanimously approved the official abstract of votes for the general election.
The Board of Canvassers is required to certify the results of the election by Nov. 19. The duties of the Board include reviewing:
The name of each candidate receiving votes, the office and the total number of votes received.
  • The number/letter of each ballot issue or question and the votes received.
  • The number of mail-in or mail ballots cast, including the number accepted and rejected.
  • The number of provisional ballots counted.

Arapahoe County gave voters three options for casting their ballot during this year’s general election. Voters could vote by mail, vote early or vote on Election Day. Election turnout was 73.49 percent of the County’s 273,435 total active voters, which was an increase from the 63 percent turnout in the 2006 mid-term General Election. Arapahoe County has 347,007 registered voters. Active voters are determined by those who voted in the last General Election.

Of the 200,953 ballots cast for the 2010 General Election, a majority – 79.5 percent or 159,757 ballots were cast by mail. Election Day turnout was 30,131 ballots cast, or 15 percent, followed by Early Voting where 5,212 ballots, or 2.5 percent of the votes were cast. In addition, 5,853 provisional ballots, or 3 percent, were included in the total vote count.

BRANDON JOHANSSON, The Aurora Sentinel
AURORA | In the two unsettled Arapahoe County races — coroner and the District 4 commissioner seat — the Democratic candidates have eked out narrow victories, the county’s top election official said Monday.
Arapahoe County Clerk and Recorder Nancy Doty said Monday that with only about 10 or 20 ballots left to count, “you can pretty much take it to the bank” that Nancy Jackson won the race in Arapahoe County commissioner District 4 and Michael Dobersen won the coroner’s race.
According to the latest figures, Jackson led Republican and Aurora city councilman Bob FitzGerald 15,960 votes to 15,647 votes.
Dobersen led Republican Jay Ledbetter 89,966 votes to 88,748 votes.
Doty said the final tally won’t be certified until Friday but she doesn’t anticipate the results changing by much.
The races were close, but Doty said neither race was close enough to require an automatic recount.

Nancy Jackson for Arapahoe County Commissioner, District 4

Nancy Jackson, the best candidate for Arapahoe County Commissioner District 4, is willing, able and very well qualified to serve in her first elected position. Nancy Jackson currently teaches Communication at the Community College of Aurora. She not only knows how to give homework assignments; she knows how to do her homework. During her summer vacation, Nancy Jackson spent nearly every Monday and Tuesday attending the Arapahoe County Board of Commissioners meetings. She attended subcommittee meetings; studied the budget; visited the courts, jails, parks and open spaces, and even the coroner's office; met individually with many department heads; and had conservations with current county commissioners. As a result, she has a very good understanding of the workings of the County and the role of a commissioner. She will be at the head of her class in serving her constituents who live in Aurora and the unincorporated areas of the district.
Nancy Jackson is a Colorado native and a 30 year resident of Arapahoe County. She raised her three children here. Nancy Jackson has degrees in psychology, counseling, and communication. In addition to teaching at the Community College of Aurora for over15 years, Nancy Jackson has also served as a Department Chair and Interim Dean. Nancy Jackson is also a small business owner; currently a property management company and previously consulting to large businesses and the military. She designed and taught classes and workshops in leadership and communication. All are skills that will be quite useful in dealing with the challenges faced by county commissioners. Nancy Jackson is an active volunteer in her community, serving on the Aurora Fox Board and previously on the boards of Aurora Mental Health and Gateway Women's Shelter. This is very valuable experience for a county commissioner since they are administrators and policy makers.
Nancy Jackson will maintain open communications through emails, newsletters, attending HOA meetings, and holding Town Hall meetings. She enjoys interacting with people and talking to them first hand, so you will see and hear more from her, especially if you join me in voting for Nancy Jackson for Arapahoe County Commissioner, District 4.
